Spring Break with Kids in Glenwood Springs

Finding something fun for the whole family to do over spring break isn’t easy, but we’ve got you covered! Whether you’re traveling with toddlers or teens, Glenwood Springs has something to offer everyone.

Activities for Toddlers

We know how difficult it can be to find something fun to do with kids under six years old. Between snack times, nap times, and all the stuff you have to bring with you, driving all over town is the last thing you want to do.

If you stay at Hotel Glenwood Springs, you don’t even need to leave the building to wear out the kids! Our pool is heated to a balmy 90 degrees, warm enough to be comfortable without being too warm for young swimmers, and features two slides, a basketball hoop, and plenty of space to splash around.
For more fun for the whole family, check out the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool! Boasting the largest naturally heated pool in the world, a 104-degree relaxation pool, and a balmy 90-degree family pool. On March 14, the new Sopris Splash Zone will re-open. This new kids’ area features a whitewater river open-air tube ride, three mini water slides, waterfalls modeled after Hanging Lake, and a lighted fountain!

Finally, access to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is in the same parking lot as the Hotel Glenwood Springs — mere steps from the lobby to the bottom of the gondola, so you don’t even have to worry about parking — and offers fun for kids of all ages. The cave tour is a thrilling walk through some of the most striking caverns in the country, and the cave is always at a cool 52 degrees inside, no matter the weather outside.

If caves aren’t your cup of tea, the Caverns also offers a wide variety of activities for small children, from an Old Tyme Photography Studio filled with props and costumes to laser tag and a 4D Motion Theater. Some of these attractions are closed in the winter, so it’s worth checking the website to make sure that you can see the ones you want.

Activities for Teens and Tweens

If your kids are a little bit older, the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park has thrill rides unlike anything else in the country. Most famous is the Alpine Coaster, named one of the 10 Best Roller Coaster Rides of Your Life by USA Today. This twisting metal track winds 3400 feet through the rocks and juniper trees to the bottom, where you’ll gradually come to a gentle stop and be pulled back to the top of the ride. Unlike an alpine slide, the coaster cars are fixed to the track, so it’s impossible to fall off! You can even ride in the winter when snow covers the mountain and the track is lit with fairy lights.

On the other side of the mountain is the Giant Swing — though it’s closed in the winter, so check your schedule. This swing carries four passengers back and forth, taking them nearly vertical at the top of each swing arc and dangling them more than 1300 feet above the Colorado River.

Are your kids fans of the great outdoors? Try renting bikes for the family and taking a ride along the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail, which stretches east for 16 miles alongside the Colorado River. Flanked by towering sandstone cliffs and rushing waters, this path is a beautiful ride through some of Colorado’s most unique terrain.

If you and your family are looking for more of a challenge, the Rio Grande trail stretches a full 42 miles from Glenwood Springs to Aspen along the old railroad line. You don’t have to ride the whole thing, but you can see some amazing sites, grab lunch in Carbondale, and take the bus right back to where you started!

If the mountain is still open, you can still get some skiing in! Glenwood Springs’ local ski area, Sunlight Mountain, is a charming little mountain with terrain for all ages and skill levels, and it’s open well past the end of most spring breaks.
